Things to do in the New Forest in Spring

05 March 2018

The New Forest is an area absolutely filled with scenic beauty, varied landscapes and exciting wildlife. But aside from the stunning natural features, there is so much to see and do in the New Forest, no matter the weather. During spring the weather is starting to get warmer, flowers are beginning to bud and it's the perfect time to get back to nature. So, let's take a look at a few of the great things that you can do with the family.

Buckler's Hard

On the banks of the Beaulieu River, you'll be able to take a glance back in time and experience life in an 18th century shipbuilding village. Learn about how local timber was used to make ships for the British Navy, discover the unspoilt village and find out how Nelson's fleet was constructed for the battle of Trafalgar.

This historical day out is perfect for families and there's even the chance to take a trip on the river cruise than runs from Easter to October.

Exbury Gardens

A true feast for the eyes, Exbury Gardens is home to world famous displays of rhododendrons, Nyssa and azaleas. Take the woodland trail and see what flora you can spot on the way, or, take the miniature steam railway that weaves through parts of the gardens that weren't open to the public before. Take a moment to enjoy a cup of tea in one of the tearooms, tuck into a picnic or let the kids run free on the children's activities.

The site exudes historical character and a trip to the house will provide information about WWII, the Rothchilds and the discovery of the microclimate that makes it ideal for growing rhododendrons.

Beaulieu Motor Museum

Not only home to over 250 vehicles, Beaulieu Motor Museum also offers the fascinating Montagu family home, richly historic Beaulieu Abbey, World of Top Gear and a secret army exhibition. This is an excellent day out, not just for car fanatics, but also the whole family. Jump on the Skytrain or veteran bus and take a tour around the area or learn about the medieval monks who lived there over 800 years ago.

Beaulieu is an unexpected gem in the heart of the New Forest, and with so many entertaining things to see and do, you'll be able to have a day filled with fun and discovery.

Careys Manor

Of course, spring isn't just a chance to get outside, but also a time to refresh and rejuvenate your mind, body and soul. A day trip to the award-winning Thai spa at Careys Manor is filled with refinement and will leave you feeling utterly pampered. Enjoy the spa features, dine at one of the 3 onsite restaurants or have a couple of treatments and unwind.

For the foodies, you'll enjoy sampling some sumptuous Thai cuisine, dine at the 3 AA rosette Cambium restaurant or satisfy your craving for fine flavours at the authentic French bistro.

A spring time trip to the New Forest is such a great experience, spot the ponies, pigs and birdlife, enjoy food at one of the many cosy country pubs and soak in the atmospheric landscape – it’s a true British gem.
